A black-and-white photograph records light and shade, but it doesn’t tell us every original color. Adding color can make a familiar scene feel newly close. It is also an interpretation — one worth approaching with curiosity and care.
What AI is actually doing
A colorization model uses visual clues to suggest plausible colors for faces, clothing and surroundings. It may produce a convincing blue sky or green garden, yet that doesn’t prove a particular coat was brown. Treat the finished image as a new interpretation of the photograph, rather than historical evidence.
Let the details you remember lead
In PicRenew, automatic color tips offer a starting point. If you know something about the scene, choose your own color tips and add a short, specific description. Try ‘cream blouse, dark brown hair, green garden’ instead of a vague instruction to improve the image.
Ask family members about clothing, uniforms or the room in the picture. A related color photograph may provide useful context. When you don’t know a color, leave room for uncertainty instead of describing a guess as fact.
Natural is a feeling, not a promise
Compare the color version with the original at the same size. Look for skin that seems too orange, shadows with odd color, or clothing that draws attention away from the person. Keep both versions in the story
Save the original black-and-white file as well as your color version. When sharing family history, say that the photo was colorized with AI. Both images can belong in the album: one records the photograph as it survived, the other invites a new way of looking at it.
